Nine Inch Nails’ unique combination of buzzsaw guitars, industrial noise, and electronic beats with intelligent and often pitch black lyrics made Trent Reznor an unlikely star and ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ an unlikely commercial success. Initially released in 1989, the album eventually peaked after several years of touring, and heavy rotation of the first sledgehammer single, ‘Head like a Hole’ on MTV. The album’s pioneering blend of palatable industrial dissonance and angst-ridden yearnings along with Reznor’s undeniable pop sensibility struck a chord with a new generation of disaffected kids.
The String Quartet Tribute to Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine lets us look at NIN’s multilayered, complex music in a new and gentler light. Reznor’s skills as a songwriter and his ear for melody are often drowned out by the studio wizardry and powerhouse beats for which his music is renowned. Stripped to its barest form, the music played on violins, viola & cello, takes on a stark and eerie feel - true goosebump music. The true test of any great song is its ability to move the listener in its most basic form and NIN’s music passes that test as this CD more than proves.
